Kai Satou (
Appearance[]
Kai is described as having the beauty of a woman.[5] He has a slender build, shoulder-length black silky hair parted down the middle, thick eyebrows, and empty dark eyes. Despite appearing thin, Kai has a strong body underneath his clothes.[6] Kai often has a blank, inexpressive face. He wears a red apron with a yellow pattern given to him by the Chidouin family over a long-sleeved black changshan with orange trimming, brown pants, and red slippers. Kai usually holds various kitchen utensils, specifically a ladle, spatula, and frying pan. Instead of shoes, Kai wears gray socks and red slippers. Presumably, this is because Kai runs out of his house without changing after receiving the message from Gashu on the night of the kidnapping.
Being a participant in the Death Game, he wears a collar, as do all Participants, Dummies, and Floor Masters.
- Flashback
In a Flashback at the start of Chapter 2, Part One, Kai is seen wearing his usual attire, except with a blue apron instead of his current one.
- Young Adulthood
As a young adult, Kai wears a more scornful expression. His eyes have already lost their glimpse. His hair is also significantly shorter, and he doesn't wear an apron.
- Childhood
As a child and young adult in his Past Episode, Kai wore a similar black changshan with orange trimming and black pants. His hair was also shorter and seemed a bit more wildly styled. Contrasting with his "dead eyes" (as described by Keiji), Kai's eyes in his childhood are represented with pupils and lights inside of them. He also was more expressive.
Personality[]
Kai is a stiff and awkward person who doesn't know how to communicate with others but has good intentions. Kai has significant affection for Sara and her family and is inspired to protect the innocents. He is the housemaker of Chidouin's residence, maintaining their daily lives and keeping them safe. Kai loves cooking, doing chores, and watching afternoon suspense dramas.[3] However, he has a dark past he wishes to leave behind.

Kai dodges uncomfortable questions.
Kai hides his emotions behind an unflappable attitude and a frying pan. Kai lacks charisma or persuasiveness, but he does try to connect with others. Kai tries to soothe those in pain. He has maternal qualities, caring for children and those in need. Kai is sentimental, never taking off the apron Mr. Chidouin gave him. Despite his somewhat intimidating demeanor, Kai has a playful personality. He often tells jokes, which usually fall flat due to his unwavering expression. Kai has a morbid sense of humor, joking about killing or maiming people.[7][8] People have trouble determining if Kai is joking or serious, which scares them. Due to Kai's secrecy, he appears as an untrustworthy individual. Kai knows he doesn't look like a regular homemaker, not taking offense to people's false assumptions. He is used to being seen in a negative light, as when he doesn't blame the people who vote for him and quickly supposes he gives a poor impression. Kai gets attached to people who treat him nicely and wants to be loved by others. He wishes Nao could save him from his darkness and seeks support from Mr. Chidouin when sharing his past.[8]
Kai is a liar. He lies to others about his past and his way of living. Kai chooses to hide the truth even when it doesn't benefit him. It leads to negative consequences for Kai and indirectly causes his death when Kai deceives others instead of telling the truth, making them think he is a traitor. Furthermore, Sara distrusts him because Kai never tells her why he has followed her. Sara's fear of her stalker made her run away when she saw Kai on her way home on the night of the kidnapping, preventing Kai from saving her.[1] Sara only learns the truth about Kai after his death.[9]
Kai has a low self-esteem. He used to feel shame for not being able to take a life and thought he belonged to darkness. He blamed himself for his brother's passing, wishing he had recognized his foolishness earlier. Kai doesn't think the "likes like him" should talk with innocent people, afraid there might be some darkness still lurking in his heart.[3][8] When Mishima starts reading Kai, Kai expects Mishima to judge him.[6] However, Kai then thanks Mishima and says it saved him in some parts.
Kai is very attentive to other people. He recognizes the darkness he sees in himself in Mishima and Keiji.[6][10] To Kai, every person has distinctive footsteps that tell a lot about their personality.[8] He can analyze people by looking at their hands.[6] Kai notes Nao's artistic personality, which makes her see beauty in everything, and her honest eyes.[8] He remarks on Sara's involuntarily Kendo neutral stance.[11] Kai also sees great potential in Gin and his ability to influence others.[12] However, Kai is bad at reading the mood as he didn't realize how much he scared Reko until she told him.[13]
Kai has an aesthetic worldview and appreciates natural beauty. He believes imperfection makes everything more alluring. Kai loves making shell necklaces and finds beauty even in cracked and damaged shells.[14] Kai prefers Mishima's imperfect flute, which can't make various sounds, to a finished product.[15] He is creative, inventing new recipes even while stuck on an island.[16]
Due to his upbringing, Kai is prone to violent escalation. When Kai fails to persuade other people, he might attack them. For example, Kai knocks Keiji out when the man tries to eat a raw egg despite Kai's warnings and does the same to Q-taro after the latter aspires to keep his thin complexion.[7][10] However, Kai never deals deadly blows. After Sue Miley executes Mishima and crudely mocks Kanna for her sister's death, Kai doesn't kill her despite having an opportunity to. From Kai's words to Kanna and Nao, he stops himself from reflectively attacking people when they suddenly sneak on him. Kai is always alarmed, even in his sleep.[15]

Kai is disgusted by Miley's actions.
Kai is enraged to see evildoers toying with others' lives, as seen in his attack on Miley. Kai has a rebellious, strong personality, going against his family and the organization to protect Sara. While Kai doesn't wish to die, he puts his loved ones above himself. Kai discloses his role as Sage to defend Sara despite knowing the danger of his choice. After Sara indirectly causes his death by revealing he is the real Sage, he doesn't bear any grudge for her or the people who voted for him. Instead, he inspires Sara to resist against their kidnappers. However, Kai's devotion has a dark side. He manipulates Nao into stealing the laptop by attacking Sou and wishes Sara would survive, even if alone. Kai's willingness to go against the organization differs him from Gashu, who sent his sons to the slaughter.
Kai gets competitive over small things. He can't stand Alice being better at making shell necklaces than him and arrogantly tells Mishima he is a superior cook.[14][15] Kai takes pride in the things he is good at. He often takes things to the next level, believing his mission is to teach Gin to do chores and create a dish Sou can eat.[12][17]
As a child, Kai had a more joyful personality. Unlike the current Kai, he didn't have a problem showing his emotions. Kai cared about impressing his father and pushed himself to his limits. He was empathetic and kind, sympathizing with Sei after hearing his story. Kai couldn't stand murder, running away in fear after seeing people killing each other on the assassin trial and being terrified of himself after nearly dealing a fatal blow to Sei. However, his brother's death changed him. He began suppressing his emotions, believing them to be unnecessary. Kai thought he could dispose of his feelings, but it only led to him ignoring them. Kai liked horror stories that brought him a different kind of fear than he usually experienced.[13] In reality, Kai was more fearful than an average person. Despite cultivating ruthless qualities, Kai still couldn't bring himself to take a life because he kept remembering the sight of Sei's death. Kai felt his father's disappointment and believed himself to be a coward and a weakling.[18]
At first, Kai didn't hold the task of guarding Sara in high regard. However, after Kai started working as a homemaker at Chidouin's household, her father warmly welcomed him into his family. Despite Kai's initial disgust, he came to want to protect their family. Being a househusband, Kai wished to leave his dark past behind. However, Kai didn't feel ordinary life suited him. He believed protecting people living happily from the shadows was enough to make him content, unwilling to insert himself into their happiness.[8] Kai didn't want to see a tragedy unfolding and worked to prevent it from happening. Because of that, he avoided talking with kind-hearted people so they wouldn't get hurt by his past catching up with him. It makes him similar to Sara in her worries that the darkness of her life might harm her friends. However, Kai still longed to find a place where he would belong. He shared his life story with Mr. Chidouin and eventually opened up to Nao.[8] He was touched when Mr. Chidouin gifted him his mother's apron, signifying Kai had become part of the family.[19]
Kai underestimates his traumatizing upbringing and even fondly recalls it.[8] Remembering passing out and throwing up during the training makes Kai nostalgic, presumably because it reminds him of spending time with his brother.
Talents and Abilities[]

- Homemaking: Being a homemaker, Kai can do various chores.
- Shell collecting: Kai can make beautiful necklaces from shells.
- Cooking: Due to being a homemaker, Kai is a perfect cook. Many people have complimented his chef talent. He takes cooking seriously and is agitated to see people eating unprepared food, such as Keiji slurping raw eggs. He can prepare delicious food even while stuck on a desert island and often comes up with new recipes. Dishes he is mentioned preparing include kebab with seafood seasoning, smoked meat, mushroom butter saute, fruit jam, strawberry jam, eggs benedict, mashed sweet potatoes with chestnuts, koshian toast, hiyashi chūka, and "Sou Soup" (possibly lean). His best dish is eggs benedict.
- Hand reading: Kai can do hand reading.[20]
- Telling scary stories: Kai scared Reko so much that she had nightmares about him.[21]
- Assassin skills: Though Kai never killed anyone, he underwent intense training to become an assassin. He trained mentally in endurance and restraint. Kai possesses the techniques of drinking poison, withstanding shocks, and holding his breath. He knows how to land finishing blows but never uses deadly techniques. Kai can knock out grown men like Q-taro and Keiji with cooking utilities. He is very attentive and always notices a person behind himself without looking. Kai can tell people apart by the sound of their footsteps and always conceals his own. Kai never lets his guard down, not even while sleeping. In fighting skills, he is evenly matched with Midori. He is also familiar with Kendo.
- Meditation: Kai starts meditating when he wants to ignore other people.[14]
- Hacking: Kai could extract Midori's personal information from the ASU-NARO database and make a hacker program.
History[]
Background[]
- Childhood
When Kai was a child, his father forced him to undergo several traumatizing trainings to become an assassin, including poison resistance, deadly gas, and shock training.
- New Brother
One day, Gashu introduced Kai to his brother, Sei Satou. At first, Sei was demeaning and condescending to Kai. He demanded Kai call him "big brudder." The brothers went through the same training, competing with each other. Kai didn't like the lack of respect Sei showed to their father. Furthermore, he was afraid Gashu saw him as a disappointment and replaced him with a new child.
Kai lost his first fight with Sei, which led him to train every day to the point of exhaustion. Sei didn't want to lose to Kai, so he trained as hard as him. After one of the training, Kai confronted Sei and, in frustration, called him an outsider. Enraged, Sei attacked Kai. After the fight, Sei started crying and told Kai he was adopted into a family to give him a rival. Hearing his brother's words, Kai saw himself in Sei and felt terrible for saying those cruel words to him. Kai began crying and apologizing to Sei. After the reconciliation, their relationships improved. Sei and Kai became brothers in the true sense of the word and often spent time together.
- Assassin Trial

Sei is killed by another child.
However, ASU-NARO didn't need several assassins. As a mysterious woman explained, they only needed one person to be the right hand of the organization. To find the ultimate assassin, ASU-NARO held a killing contest among children from assassin families, and the last child standing would be the successor. When they arrived on the island, Kai was horrified to see everyone killing each other. Sei, on the other hand, killed two people. When Sei and Kai met on the island, Sei threatened to kill Kai but couldn't bring himself to do it. They went easy for a while, not dealing any deadly blows. Sei bursts into tears and says their father only trained Kai as if he hoped Sei would lose. When Sei lost his guard, another child fatally stabbed him in the back. Before falling to the ground, Sei slit the boy's throat to prevent him from hurting Kai. As he died, the boy cursed and said he would have been a winner if he had killed Sei and Kai. Sei begged Kai to kill him with his own hands so his death wouldn't be so lonely. Instead, Kai held his dying brother in his arms and didn't let go until Sei's last breath.
Kai could not bring himself to kill another person after Sei's death. Kai failed to carry out every assassination order given to him, which led to his low standing in the organization. In his teenage years, Kai had been assigned to guard Sara Chidouin until the Death Game.
- Chidouin's Household

Kai does shopping in the grocery store.
As a cover for his true goal, Kai began working as a housekeeper in the Chidouin household, helping Mr. Chidouin with his work tasks and housework. It wasn't a job Kai gave much regard to until Mr. Chidouin welcomed him as if he were his own son. At first, Kai was disgusted, but in time, he came to want to protect Sara and her family. Kai told Mr. Chidouin about his past and role in the organization, but the man didn't seem troubled. In fact, Mr. Chidouin encouraged Kai to believe that his kindness ultimately saved Kai's life when Sei protected him from having blood on his hands. At some point, Mr. Chidouin even gave Kai the red apron that once belonged to his mother; touched, Kai teared up and futilely tried to hide it.
As a housekeeper, Kai cooked and took care of the house. He enjoyed preparing Sara's favorite dishes and always made her something sweet. Kai also acted as Sara's guardian, watching over her from the shadows. However, Sara didn't know about Kai, mistaking him for a stalker. Kai probably wore a fake beard and worked undercover at a kebab shop that Sara and Joe frequented.[16]
At Mr. Chidouin's request, Kai followed Sara to a board game meeting sometime before the night of the kidnapping.[22]
- Kai's Emails

Kai realizes his conversations with Mr. Chidouin were tracked.
Kai betrayed the organization and hacked the ASU-NARO database to find a way to prevent the Death Game. Kai only left his guard duty to send emails from home to his father and Mr. Chidouin. However, all exchanges between Mr. Chidouin and Kai went to the organization. On the day of the kidnapping, Kai sent a fake email to the Organization to disrupt processing and let Sara escape, but Gashu tricked Kai into sending a phrase that set the Death Game events in motion. Gashu signs his final message with "Thankies a million," a phrase Mr. Chidouin used in his conversations with Kai.
The Death Game[]
Chapter 1, Part One[]
- The Night of the Kidnapping

"Don't go home!"
On the night of the Death Game, Kai rushes to warn Sara not to go home. However, she and Joe think he is a stalker and run away. He follows them home and encounters Sara, who screams and falls unconscious on the floor. Hearing her voice, Joe rushes up the stairs and, seeing Kai, tries to punch him. It is unclear what happened next, but Kai, Joe, and Sara are captured.[23][24] Remarkably, Joe doesn't recognize Kai's face.
- First Trial

Kai wakes up after the kidnapping.
Kai's First Trial took place in the kitchen. Upon awakening, he found various utensils and a key on the table. Kai refused to give any more information about his First Trial, so it's unclear what he was set up to do.[25]
- The Group Meeting
— Kai about being kidnapped |

Everyone gathers at the Center Hall.
During the group meeting, Kai introduces himself as an unremarkable homemaker, akin to a househusband, and presents cooking utilities he has found in the kitchen. Kai doesn't want Sara to know he's been watching her, so he lies it's their first meeting. Kai offers Sara his frying pan as protection, but she refuses. When it is Kanna's turn to introduce herself, she screams and loses consciousness, stricken by the memories of her sister's violent death. Keiji encourages everyone to stay calm and suggests that they confirm what they found in the Facility. Kai supports his idea, and Q-taro shows a large box he had to bring during the First Trial. Inside, they find a doll's head and a note telling them to bring its parts together. Kai wonders where the body could be, and Joe suggests they search the building in groups. Kai agrees to investigate with Q-taro, and Sara joins Sou.
- The Russian Roulette

Investigating the Blue Room.
Q-taro, Kai, Keiji, and Joe are searching Blue Room when Sou and Sara come in. While investigating one of the dolls, Kai notes it has a weighty feel. Upon shaking it, Kai hears a sloshing sound. Kai jokes to Sara the kidnapper wants them to stick a straw in it and drink the liquid when they find themselves thirsty, but Sara takes his comment seriously and says the head seems solidly built. Kai apologizes for joking in inappropriate situations. When Sara is ready to leave the room to search somewhere else, iron bars appear in front of the door, separating her and Sou. With the group locked, a painting on the wall introduces itself as a master of the room, Meister, and explains the rules of the "next game." Meister says that one person in the group will be the Challenger, and the other four will sit down and be targets. Joe asks Sara to be the Challenger because it guarantees she won't be hurt, yet Kai argues that a young girl shouldn't handle a gun and suggests holding a vote to settle the argument.
Q-taro says he has experience with firearms and thus should be the Challenger, but Keiji tells Q-taro that he is untrustworthy. Kai remarks on the tension in the room and notes it pains him to put the responsibility on Sara. However, Joe encourages Kai to believe in Sara's "steel mind," and the word catches Kai's attention. When Keiji disputes with Q-taro, Kai tells him he puts too much trust in Sara and offers his interpretation: according to him, Keiji concluded Sara and Joe are trustworthy because they vouch for each other. Keiji argues it's just his intuition, but Kai notes a piece missing in his story.
Kai remarks they don't know what the game entails, but because it requires gun skills, they should trust the role of Challenger to a more experienced Q-taro. He finds it suspicious that Keiji, a policeman, doesn't suggest his candidature, but Keiji ignores Kai's doubts. Kai keeps pressuring him and says they need to know why the most experienced member of the group wouldn't handle a gun. Finally, Keiji reveals he is not capable of firing a firearm ever since he shot a person. Because Q-taro and Sara are the only suitable candidates, they debate who should handle the gun. Even if Sara wins the argument and persuades Q-taro, Kai still votes against her being the Challenger.

Setup of the Russian roulette room.
No matter what, Sara becomes the Challenger by the Majority Vote. Kai urges Sara not to panic, and the group takes their seats. After Sara successfully beats the game, Kai congratulates her. As a reward, Meister gives them the doll's right arm. The group leaves the room to continue the investigation. Sara can ask to be Kai's search partner, which would flatten him. However, he will encourage Sara to ask Joe instead because he is her friend. Ultimately, Kai's investigation partner is Q-taro. Before the group separates, Kai addresses Sara and thanks her for saving them. He says while Sara is not an average high schooler, she mustn't shoulder too much as it can overwhelm her. Sara wants to ask Kai a question, but at this moment, she suddenly realizes Kai is her stalker. She gets pale, and Joe helps her to leave the room.
- The Second Trial
After Sara discovers all the doll parts, everyone assembles in the Pink Room to put them together. Keiji attaches the limbs to the doll's torso found in the room, and at first, nothing happens. However, the room goes white, and the laughing doll Sue Miley appears from the smog. She declares the participants will go through a trial in which one person will die. Sue Miley gives everyone a voting tablet and tells the group to vote for someone as a test. Kai votes for himself. By the end of the vote, Mishima has received the most votes. As a punishment, Miley executes him by having his collar burned his head off his neck. While Nao sobs by her professor's corpse, Miley starts tormenting Kanna, calling her sister-killer. It angers Kai, and he bangs Miley on the head with the frying pan, causing severe bleeding. He offers a mocking excuse that the hand "must've slipped" and notes her bleeding despite supposedly being a doll. Kai says she will pay for toying with people's lives, and furious, Miley curses and promises Kai to remember this on the grounds of the Main Game. She stomps out of the room, leaving stunned participants behind.
Chapter 1, Part Two[]
- Mishima's Death Aftermath
Sou points out a message on the back of the door, which says the death can avoided if the votes come to a draw. Reko blames herself for suggesting leaving the door open, but Kai says it's no one's fault as they were led in doing so, and the room had an ominous air before entering. Joe, however, wants to know who voted for Mishima, but Keiji argues they shouldn't press this matter, and Reko supports him. In the end, Joe leaves it be. Except for Keiji, Nao, and Gin, everyone exits the room.

Kai picks up the Sage card.
In the cafeteria, Sara catches Kai staring at the kitchen. When Sara approaches him, he lies that the room is locked and says he wants to enter it to cook for everyone, even though he doubts the ingredients will be inside. Sara remembers feeling sincere anger from Kai when he hit Miley, making her doubt if Kai was her stalker. When Sara is going to confront Kai about it, the lights go out. Kai asks Sara if she is alright and suggests to look for a switch. Sara sees a glowing card under a table and picks it up before Kai can notice. After Kai turns on the lights, he says they should look at the other rooms to check if anything has occurred. In the manga, this is the moment Kai picks up the Sage card.[26]
- Retrieval of the Laptop

Kai threatens Nao with a knife.
After the body collection announcement, Nao runs out of the pink room to the cafeteria, where Kai grabs her by the hand and pushes into the kitchen. Threatening Nao with a knife, Kai tells her to retrieve the laptop from Sou. He gives her his frying pan and says to strike Sou's head from behind. Kai says that if she refuses, he will hand the keys from the kitchen to someone else. Kai says Sara will be in trouble if he doesn't get the laptop.
Something caused a power outage. Nao goes to the hidden room, bangs Sou on the head with a frying pan, and takes his laptop to give it to Kai. He uses a secret passage to the third floor, changes the password to Mr. Chidouin's name, and writes the last message to Sara in case he doesn't survive. He leaves the laptop in the room of rubble. Before reuniting wit the group, Kai locks Nao in the kitchen and tosses the keys between the bars on the second floor.
- Meeting at the Bar
After the lights appear, Sara and Keiji find Kai in the cafeteria. Sara is agitated seeing him, but Keiji tells Kai they were speaking of meeting up. Kai mentions that Joe told everyone to gather at the bar. He offers them to go there together.
Kai is surprised to see a tied-up man in the bar. After the said person regains consciousness, Sara starts the interrogation. Kai believes this man to be quite tiring, which astounds Sara, who thinks of Kai as an unbothered and aloof person. The group learns the man's name is Gonbee Yamada, and he is a prisoner incarcerated for theft who doesn't know anything about the kidnapping. After Sara finishes the questioning, Joe removes his ropes, and Gonbee warns the group they shouldn't expect him to cooperate. Everyone except for Sou and Kanna goes away to search for Nao. Once again, Kai partners with Q-taro, and they search in the game room.
At some point, Kai picks the Sage card and conversates with Joe.[27]
- The Main Game
After everyone arrives at the Main Game grounds, Miley explains the rules.
During the discussion, Sou claims to have the Keymaster card. If Sara doesn't say anything, Kai steps in and tells Sou he won't believe him so easily; however, for the time being, he trusts that he is the Keymaster as no one else admitted to having this role. As the conversation continues, Q-taro suggests voting for Gonbee because he is the most suspicious, but Joe opposes it. Kai supports him and says they shouldn't unanimously vote for Gonbee, as it would make him the only candidate. Kai suggests that the kidnappers granted Gonbee the Sacrifice card because he was the least trustworthy, and Keiji concludes they need at least five candidates to survive.
- Searching for the candidates
Gonbee proposes Sara as the first candidate. He says she alone has the weapon, yet Sara refutes his remark by showing him an empty knife box. Kai elaborates that Sara couldn't have taken it because the kitchen was locked the whole time, and she rarely acted alone. Gonbee asks who took the knife if not Sara, but she says it's irrelevant. Q-taro suggests choosing the most useless members of the group, which are Kanna, Nao, and Gin. However, Kanna says she has no will to live and wants to go to her dead sister. Kai supposes Kanna might have the Sacrifice card and puts an act, wishing to make everyone vote for her. For now, the discussion shifts to Gin's actions during the investigation.
To prove his worth, Gin shows pieces of paper he has found in the shedder, and together with Sara, he matches her pieces found in the red room. The papers reveal names, occupations, and percentages next to them. Kai wonders what those numbers might mean. The group learns that someone with the name Alice Yabusame is a killer, and the suspicions fall on Reko, as she has the same surname. In a panic, Reko tries to say Alice is her brother's name, and Kai points out that her excuses become illogical; however, Gonbee steps up for her and declares that his real name is Alice Yabusame.
Sou proposes to hear Nao's justification as he considers her actions illogical. Nao insists she went into a panic after the body announcement, took the box with Mishima's head, and hid in the kitchen. Kai confirms her words and says he hasn't found anything suspicious there. Opposing his words, Sara points out the empty knife case and says Nao could take the knife out of it. It makes Joe wonder when Nao found the keys to the kitchen, and she says the door was opened when she ran there and locked it from the inside. Gin works out that someone was there first and took the knife.
Nao attempts to assure everyone she hasn't done anything while in the kitchen: according to her, she held the box the entire time. Yet, Keiji accuses her of lying, as the box didn't contain Mishima's head. Joe wonders why Nao didn't get angry at the people who voted for Mishima, and Sou suggests she didn't care for the professor. On edge, Reko tells everyone to stop questioning Nao and reveals the conversation between her and Mishima, in which he has advised Nao to vote for each other. Nao voted for Mishima as asked, but he voted for himself to protect her.
- Nao Reveals the Secret

Kai argues with Nao.
The group hasn't figured out the disappearance of Mishima's head but decides Nao is innocent. However, Sou insists on questioning her further and pressures Nao until she admits to hitting him with a frying pan. She professes to be threatened by Kai and says he made her strike Sou to take the laptop. Kai denies threatening Nao, arguing that if he mistreated her, there would be no reason for Nao to stay silent about it. Nao calls Kai awful and gets into an argument with him, in which Sara sides with her. In the end, Nao tells everyone about their conversation in the kitchen.
- The Emails
Sou reveals he has unlocked the laptop, and the password was Sara's surname — Chidouin. Kai asks Sou if he has read the emails, which Sou affirms. Sou quotes the emails in the wrong order, as he didn't have the time to sort them out. It makes Kai and Sara seem suspicious. Q-taro asks Kai if there is a mistake, refusing to believe he might be with the kidnappers. Kai says Sou's lies would be exposed if they had a laptop.
The group doesn't believe Sara might be a traitor, which causes Sou to break down. He laughs hysterically and blames everyone for being blind to Sara's lies. Sou and Sara argue until the time comes to vote.
- The Main Vote
The nominees are Kanna, Sou, Sara, Joe, and Kai. Kai has three votes, excluding Sara's. Sou and Sara claim to be the Keymaster, so the group addresses the Sage to tell them the truth. However, no one admits to having this role, leading the group to the recognition that the Sage must be among the nominees: the Sage cannot disclose their vote because otherwise, they get voted. Keiji notices Joe's avoidant behavior and asks if he is the Sage. Unexpectedly, Joe confirms it and promises to name the Keymaster if they leave him out of the vote. Q-taro agrees, and Joe says Sara is the Keymaster. Q-taro proposes to search for the Sacrifice among Nao, Kanna, and Sou when Kanna suddenly interrupts him. The girl says she is the Sage, and Sou has the Key. Kai discloses his role to protect Sara. To determine who has the Sage, Sara asks for the design of the Keymaster card. Kai is the only one who stays silent, which means he has the Sage, as the divination only states the role but not the card design. After Sara points this out, Kai laughs bitterly and says his fate is set. However, he tells the group he doesn't wish to die and begs them to vote for Sou, reasoning Joe has the Sacrifice. Kai promises to share vital information for their escape if they let him live.
- The Results

Kai's act of resistance.
“Our lives toyed with to our enemy's whims, we are unable to save even a single person... As we die off, this is... my feeble... resistance. But it is one large step... toward counterattack...! It is a step I was able to take... because you bought me time. It is surely... not futile. I entrust them to you...! Our regrets...!! Our hopes...!! I... am satisfied. ” |
— Kai's last words[src] |
Kai receives the most votes. Excluding Sara, three people have voted for Sou, and six for Kai. Kai says he understands it because voting for a potential Sacrifice would be dangerous. Sou assures him he lost due to the cowardice of the rest of the group, as they believe killing Kai was a matter of logic and not their will.
Cheerfully, Miley declares that Kai will be "the main event," while Joe, the Sacrifice, is the opening act. Miley attaches tubes to Joe's body, which slowly drains his blood. She gives Sara a button that slows the draining when Sara presses it. No matter how erratically Sara clicks on it, Joe dies. Spoiling Miley's hopes for retribution, Kai slices his veins using the knife he found in the kitchen before his execution starts. When Miley notices Kai is already on the verge of death, Q-taro attacks her and refuses to let her go even if she kills him; captured by Q-taro, Miley cannot activate the device to kill Kai, giving him the time to say the last words to Sara. Kai tells her this is his resistance and entrusts her with their hopes and regrets. When Kai loses consciousness due to the blood loss, Q-taro shouts out his name.

Trivia[]
- His likes are listed as "???" in his character profile.[3]
- The kanji that makes up his first name is 戒, kai?, lit. "precept."
- In Japanese, Kai can also mean "shell", a fact often joked about by Nankidai and Kai himself. In Māori, kai means "food" or "meal".
- The kanji that make up his last name are 佐, sa?, lit. "assistant; help" and 藤, tou?, lit. "wisteria."
- "Satou" is pronounced the same way as the Japanese word for "sugar" (砂糖), adding to the food theme of his character.
- The meanings of the flower wisteria, which Kanji makes Kai's second name, are "Welcome," "Loyalty," "Kindness," "Never leave/let go," and "Lovesickness." The white wisteria holds an additional meaning, "Nostalgic memories."[29][30] In Japan, the flower symbolizes feminine beauty. It's believed wisteria can ward off evil spirits and misfortunes.[31]
- According to the manga, Kai was born in 1991.[32] It would make him 26 at the start of the Death Game if it begins in 2017.
- As it confirmed that Kai is in his late twenties, the game must've started from 2017 to 2020.
- Kai's hallucination in Your Time to Shine differs from the "hallucination" Sara sees in her nightmare in Chapter 2, Part One.
- Kai doesn't have audible footsteps.[21]
- Keiji and Kai are the same age, so Nankidai tends to draw them up in his Twitter posts with an absurd rivalry.[33]
- Kai's frypan is named Paraifyn (パライフン, Paraifun?), the Japanese characters are an anagram of "frypan" (フライパン, furaipan?).[34][34][35]
- Because Rio Ranger was created by Gashu and based on Kai's adopted brother Sei, Kai and Ranger are technically brothers.
- Kai is one of three participants whose First Trials are unknown, along with Gin and Reko.
- However, his First Trial is partially explained in the Manga version of Kimi ga Shine.
- When Kai was a child, he used the personal pronoun Boku and switched to Watashi as he grew up.
- Despite Kai being a non-candidate and, therefore, supposedly not having an AI, his AI is seen in Kimi ga Shine Bangai-hen: Seizon Shima.
